Sometimes progress is difficult to measure.

It happens one training session at a time, through difficult matches, mistakes, corrections, and the willingness to keep working even when the results have not yet caught up with the effort.

And then there are days when that progress becomes impossible to miss.

For NC United FC’s U17 Academy, the trip from the Charlotte area to Radford, Virginia, became one of those days.

The journey north provided a beautiful backdrop as the team traveled into Virginia. At the field, cool temperatures, cloudy skies, and no rain created excellent conditions for soccer on a beautiful pitch.

But there was also unfinished business waiting.

A Second Opportunity

Earlier in the season, NC United hosted Rush United and fell 2–1.

It had been a competitive match and certainly not a discouraging performance, but the result belonged to Rush. With the teams scheduled to meet only twice, this trip to Virginia represented NC United’s final opportunity this season to respond on the field.

The objective wasn’t revenge.

It was to show how much this group has grown.

And they did.

Taking Control

NC United established itself early.

William Marquez Hernandez opened the scoring around the 13th minute, and only a few minutes later, Jordan Riquelme Santa Cruz made it 2–0.

Instead of becoming comfortable with the advantage, the team continued working.

The second half brought three more goals. Jason Hernandez scored twice, before Jordan Riquelme Santa Cruz added his second of the afternoon to complete the 5–0 result.

Goals: William Marquez Hernandez — 13’ · Jordan Riquelme Santa Cruz — 17’ · Jason Hernandez — 57’ · Jason Hernandez — 63’ · Jordan Riquelme Santa Cruz — 74’.

And even five goals don’t tell the entire story.

NC United created several additional scoring opportunities that went unfinished. There remains plenty to improve—and that may be one of the most encouraging parts of the performance.

This was a convincing result, but not a finished product.

More Than the Score

Perhaps the most meaningful comparison isn’t 5–0 against Rush.

It is this team against the version of itself that began the season.

The Academy has faced challenges from the beginning, including the realities of building cohesion while several players balance their high school soccer commitments. Training together consistently has not always been possible.

Yet the trend has continued moving forward.

Players are learning one another. The team is becoming more cohesive. Confidence is growing. Lessons from earlier matches are beginning to appear in later performances.

The first meeting with Rush ended 2–1 in their favor.

The second ended 5–0 for NC United.

That difference represents more than seven goals of separation between two scorelines. For this group, it represents evidence that patience, work, and perseverance are producing something.

A Beautiful Day in the Journey

There was something fitting about the setting.

A road trip through the scenery between North Carolina and Virginia. A beautiful field waiting at the destination. Cool air and cloudy skies overhead. Good conditions to simply play soccer.

And then 90 minutes in which so much of the team’s recent work came together.

Those are days worth remembering—not because everything was perfect, but because they remind us to appreciate the journey while we are still living it.

Grateful for Every Step

As with every victory, we receive this one with gratitude.

We are thankful to our players for continuing to work and believe in the process. We are thankful to our coaches for teaching and challenging them. And we are especially thankful to the families who continue supporting these young men through training, high school commitments, and long road trips like this one.

Above all, we give the glory to God for the opportunity to make this journey together—for the ability to play, to learn, to improve, and to enjoy days like this one.

“Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others.”

Colossians 3:23

There is still much work ahead.

But on this beautiful afternoon in Virginia, the growth was visible.

Developing Players. Building Character. Honoring God.
