NC United FC continued its preseason journey Wednesday night with its second meeting against Queen City Mutiny, this time facing a very different test: Queen City Mutiny's MLS NEXT group and many of its regular players.
The final score was 4–2 in favor of Queen City Mutiny, but for NC United, the evening provided something preseason is designed to deliver — a clearer picture of the progress already made and the work still ahead.
It was arguably NC United's most intense test of the preseason.
Queen City showed composure in possession, connected passes effectively to work through pressure, and created danger from the wide areas. NC United responded with its own strengths: staying compact, competing aggressively for the ball, applying pressure and making the center of the field difficult to penetrate.
Rather than allowing QC to consistently play through the middle, NC United forced much of the opponent's progression toward the outside. That discipline, work rate and willingness to compete were encouraging signs from a group that is still learning how to function together.
Growth You Can See
Josue Flores scored both NC United goals, giving the team two responses against a strong opponent. More importantly, throughout the match the group continued competing, supporting one another and accepting the challenge rather than backing away from it.
The hard work and sacrifice of preseason are beginning to become visible. Players are growing more comfortable with one another, confidence is developing, and the team's identity is beginning to take shape.
But development also requires recognizing what is not yet complete.
At times, NC United found itself between two ideas — pressing high or remaining patient and playing through the moment. When several players committed to one approach while others read the situation differently, the team stopped moving completely as one unit.
That is not something to hide from.
It is something to learn from.
Communication, collective understanding and cleaner execution in decisive moments are among the next steps for this group. The encouraging part is that the players have demonstrated both the work ethic and the humility to receive that feedback.
The Value of the Test
This was NC United's second preseason encounter with Queen City Mutiny. The previous meeting involved a different QC group; Wednesday's match raised the challenge significantly by providing an opportunity to compete against their MLS NEXT group.
That progression is exactly why these relationships matter.
NC United is grateful to Queen City Mutiny for its openness to continue creating opportunities for the clubs to compete and develop together. Strong opponents expose details that training alone cannot always reveal, and NC United intends to make full use of those opportunities.
For a developing team, winning cannot be measured only by the number on the scoreboard.
Sometimes progress looks like recognizing a mistake. Sometimes it is staying compact under pressure. Sometimes it is discovering that eleven hardworking players must become eleven players thinking and moving together.
And sometimes a difficult opponent provides exactly the lesson a team needs before the matches begin to count.
“The result was 4–2. The opportunity was much bigger than the result.”
NC United leaves this match with more information, more experience and another opportunity to improve.
One step closer. One team. One purpose.
Developing Players. Building Character. Honoring God.
