Some victories begin long before the opening whistle.

On Sunday, September 13, NC United FC traveled from the Charlotte area to Weldon, North Carolina, for a moment the club had been building toward throughout the summer: the first league match in the history of its UPSL Men Division 1 team.

After weeks of training, tryouts, preseason matches, adjustments and lessons, it was finally time for the games to count.

The result was a 4–1 road victory over FC Roanoke — a strong beginning, but also the first chapter of something NC United knows will require much more work.

The Journey Before the Match

Getting to the field was part of the challenge.

For many of the players, Sunday began with an approximately three-and-a-half-hour trip from the Charlotte area to Weldon. It was a long day on the road before anyone touched a ball in competition.

After the long trip from Charlotte, the group had a moment to stretch its legs and take in the Roanoke River before Match Day began.

But it also provided an early example of what being a team means away from the field.

Harrison Holton, Hunbal Durrani and Coach Choko made their vehicles available for carpooling, helping transport teammates who otherwise may not have been able to make the trip.

It may seem like a small detail compared with goals and results, but it represents something important to NC United. They gave up personal space, convenience and comfort because the team needed them.

Those are the kinds of sacrifices that turn a collection of players into something closer to a family. They are also lessons that extend far beyond soccer: recognizing when someone else needs help, sharing what we have, and understanding that sometimes the good of the group asks something from us personally.

NC United FC extends a special thank you to Harrison, Hunbal and Coach Choko — and to everyone who helped make the journey possible.

A Moment to Take It In

After the long drive, the team arrived in Weldon with some time to stretch its legs, gather together and appreciate the beautiful view along the Roanoke River.

For a few moments, before the preparation and intensity of Match Day took over, the group could simply take in where the journey had brought them.

Then it was time to play.

The First Whistle

NC United entered its first UPSL Men Division 1 match carrying the lessons of a preseason deliberately built around challenges.

The team had been tested by strong opponents. It had learned about pressing together, communicating, staying compact, responding to adversity and turning individual effort into collective execution.

Sunday offered the first opportunity to apply those lessons when the result officially counted.

NC United struck first and ultimately scored four times in a 4–1 victory.

A historic first: NC United FC opened its UPSL Men Division 1 campaign with a 4–1 road victory.

Adrian Garthaus delivered a memorable performance in the club's inaugural league match, scoring three goals for the first hat trick of NC United's Men D1 league campaign.

Adrian's hat trick deserves to be celebrated, but the performance was built on a collective effort. The goals came from the work of a team that competed, created opportunities and continued pushing throughout the match.

Imer Guinto Avila added the other NC United goal.

And even with four goals on the scoreboard, there were additional opportunities left unfinished. That gives NC United both something to celebrate and something to continue working on.

A Beginning, Not a Destination

A 4–1 result is a strong way to open a season, but one match does not define what this team will become.

The preseason showed progress. Sunday showed more of it.

There will be tougher moments ahead, different opponents, difficult trips and matches where opportunities are harder to find. The challenge now is to continue building on the habits that brought the team to this point: work, communication, humility, sacrifice and trust in one another.

The first league result belongs to everyone who helped make the day possible — those who scored, those who defended, those who traveled, those who drove, those who supported and those who put the needs of the team ahead of their own convenience.

Firstfruits

For NC United FC, this first result carries another meaning.

As we begin our first UPSL Men Division 1 season, we offer these firstfruits of the team's work to God with gratitude.

Not because a victory is promised, and not because the scoreboard determines the value of our work, but because the abilities, opportunities, friendships and responsibilities entrusted to us are gifts to be used well.

“There is much more soccer ahead. There is much more work ahead. But this was the first one.”
